A Psalm of Lament for the Nation’s Spiritual Decline and the Upcoming Elections

O Lord, our hearts are heavy,
For our land turns from Your ways,
In the shadows of despair,
Darkness covers the paths of the just.

The towers of pride rise high,
Yet the humble cry out for justice;
The echoes of Your Truth have been silenced,
And righteousness wanders lost in the night.

Where are the watchmen, O Lord?
Where are the public servants of Your Nation?
They have turned aside,
Chasing after the fleeting winds of vanity.

Restore, O God, the spirit of the people;
Revive our hearts with reverence and awe,
That we may stand in unity,
Bold in proclaiming Your Holy Name.

As the elections draw near, Lord,
Raise up leaders who fear You,
Who will not falter in their duty,
But will uphold the truth with integrity.

Grant us wisdom to discern,
The voices of the righteous from deceit,
That we may choose wisely,
And align our hearts with Your divine will.

Hear our cries, O God Most High,
For the unjust prosper,
And the righteous are oppressed;
Lift up the fallen and restore their hope.

In prayer, we seek Your guidance,
With every choice we must make;
For in You lies our foundation,
The Rock from which all strength flows.

Open the eyes of the blind leaders,
That they may see Your eternal truths,
Let their hearts be softened,
That they may lead with Your vision.

Teach us to rise in humility,
To walk justly and love mercy,
For our nation is but a reflection
Of our fervent prayers and bold actions.

Deliver us from the chains of apathy,
Let our voices be united as one;
For in the darkness, Your light shines forth,
And in the valley of despair, hope is reborn.

Let our homes be filled with faith,
Our streets echo with Your praise,
For we are but pilgrims on this earth,
Seeking the Kingdom that is to come.

O Lord, our Redeemer, guide us in this hour,
May our decisions bring glory to Your name;
In the midst of our trials, remind us of Your promise,
That You are with us, now and always.

A Prayer to the Church for Unity and Participation in Our Democratic Process

O Lord, our hearts are heavy as we gather in lament over our nation, recognizing the turmoil and division that has beset us. We see how swiftly our land turns from Your ways, with shadows of despair falling upon us. Yet, even in this lament, we acknowledge our unity in Christ, a bond that transcends our differences. Though we may not agree on every issue of the day, we are reminded that each voice matters, each vote carries weight, and that together, we can seek a brighter future rooted in hope and justice.

As we approach this important election season, stir within us a sense of urgency and responsibility to participate fully in the democratic process You have entrusted to us. Help us to actively engage, to think deeply, and to pray earnestly about the choices we face. May our hearts be filled with compassion as we listen to differing opinions, acknowledging that every person holds a piece of Your truth. Let us remember that our unity as the body of Christ calls us to approach these conversations with grace and respect, even when we disagree.

Raise up leaders among us who genuinely fear You, those who will not compromise their integrity for popularity, and who will seek to govern in a manner aligned with Your will. Open their eyes to understand the issues that matter most to our communities, and give them the courage to act justly. As voters, empower us to discern wisely, allowing Scripture and Your teachings to guide our decisions amidst the noise of the world.

Lord, deliver us from apathy and self-interest. Remind us that participating in elections is not just a right but a privilege that we have as Your people. Let our voices rise in unison, filled with hope, purpose, and a commitment to the common good. May we approach the ballot box with a spirit of unity, acknowledging our shared desire for peace and righteousness, even as we navigate our differences.

In all our decisions, let our focus remain on You, the Rock of our salvation, that we may bring glory to Your name above all else. May our actions echo the prayers of our hearts as we trust You to guide us in this hour of need.

As we move forward together, let us not only exercise our right to vote but do so with a heart of humility, recognizing that every decision can pave the way for greater unity and understanding. In this vital moment, may we participate wholeheartedly, knowing that each of us is called to be a light in the darkness, advocating for love, justice, and truth in our communities.

Amen.

A Thanksgiving Prayer

The ink is dry on all of our past
The pages we turned are recorded at last
Some are stained by the tears of our pain
And most are remembered by the joys that we gained
Memories are memories and they cannot be changed
They can only be embraced by how our minds arranged
So here we come to this Thanksgiving day
And what we bring to celebrate and weigh
To make each day count, the advantage to take
To keep writing our pages, great memories to make
So let’s mark this day as a day to remember
Thanksgiving 2022 in the month of November
We lay down a feast and celebrate this meal
And before you, Oh Great God, we humbly kneel
Today we celebrate your overwhelming grace
Looking forward to the future and blessings to embrace
With tremendous joy of grateful celebration
We step into the future with great anticipation
Amen

Amazing Grace I did Receive (Devotional and Song)

Amazing Grace – Male Vocal

Amazing Grace – Female Vocal

Scripture: Jonah 2:2 (NIV)

“In my distress, I called to the Lord, and He answered me. From the depths of the grave, I called for help, and You listened to my cry.”

Devotional: Amazing Grace, How Sweet the Sound

Through the book of Jonah, his story resonates with anyone who has ever found themselves in a place of rebellion against God. It begins with Jonah receiving a clear call from God: to go to Nineveh and call its people to repentance. Yet, Jonah’s response is to flee in the opposite direction. He embarks on a journey to Tarshish, seeking a path of his own making, a path devoid of God’s purpose.

This is often our human condition—we hear the call of God, but our hearts are either afraid, prideful, or stubborn. We think we know better, convinced that our version of freedom will bring us fulfillment. The hymn “Amazing Grace” echoes profoundly here, reminding us of the incredible gift we have been given through Christ’s sacrifice. Yet, we sometimes trample on that gift, trading it in for a false sense of autonomy.

When we seek to rule our own lives from our self-made thrones, we undermine the true freedom that God wants for us. We create illusions of control; we convince ourselves that we can define our destinies. Just like Jonah, we often fail to recognize that choosing our way leads us away from the very thing we long for—peace, purpose, and fulfillment.

The truth is that freedom does not come through self-rule; rather, true freedom lies in surrendering to God. When we attempt to navigate life without Him, we may think we are escaping the constraints of obedience. However, what we often discover is that this misplaced freedom leads us down a path of pain, shame, and ultimately, enslavement to sin. Jonah learned this lesson the hard way. As he fled, he found himself in a storm, ultimately leading to his descent into the very depths he sought to escape.

In these moments of chaos, we too can feel as if we are trapped in the belly of our own metaphorical whale, isolated from God and lost in despair. It’s in this darkness that we can cry out, just as Jonah did. “In my distress, I called to the Lord, and He answered me.” This cry is not one of self-pity but a plea for redemption. It is the realization that despite our waywardness, God is still merciful and attentive to our cries.

When we come to the end of ourselves, acknowledging our failures and sins, we can finally see the grace that was always extended toward us. God’s grace invites us to exchange our burdens for His joy, lifting us from the grave of our making. Imagine Jonah, wrapped in darkness, suddenly realizing that salvation could come only from the One he had sought to escape. As he turns in repentance, God eagerly saves him.

As you ponder your own journey, consider the areas where you may be running from God’s call. What thrones have you built, and where have you traded the grace of God for your version of freedom? The incredible truth is that even in our darkest moments, God is waiting for our return. He wants to lift us from the chains of our making and place us on the path of life.

He invites us to surrender, to step off the dead-end road of false freedom, and embrace His truth. This is not merely about turning away from our mistakes but actively choosing to run toward Him. Just as Jonah had to make the decision to obey God’s call after his experience in the belly of the whale, we too have that choice. With every step we take toward Him, we feel His hand lifting us from our own graves.

As we reflect on the lyrics “I once was lost but now I’m found; was blind but now I see,” let us consider the grace that has not only saved us but has also opened our eyes to the life God has in store for us. Our journey of faith is one of continual return to that grace, finding our true freedom in Him.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You for the amazing grace that saves us from our wandering hearts. Help us to recognize the false freedoms we cling to and turn back to You. May we embrace the path You have set before us, trusting in Your plan and leaning on Your strength. Lift us from our graves, Lord, and restore our hearts. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Closing Thought

Let us remember that the sweet sound of amazing grace is not just a melody to be sung but a truth to be lived. May we daily choose to walk in His freedom, forever grateful for the grace that saves a wretch like us, transforming our lives from death to life. Just like Jonah, we can find hope and restoration when we turn back to the source of all grace. Each day is an opportunity to embrace His gift of freedom, recalling that our hearts can truly be set free when we run toward the God who loves us unconditionally.

A Writing

Amazing Grace how sweet the sound
That saved a wretch like me
But I trampled on that gift of life
Refusing to be set free

I traded it in for my version of freedom
Ruling others from my own throne
Instead of following the Master’s plan
I wrote one of my own

I failed to see that it was a lie
A folly from the master of deceit
I thought I invented it on my own
How the system I would cheat

I learned the art of hiding out
And dodging from my own shame
Never taking responsibility
Everyone else was to blame

But in the end I was the fool
For freedom I did not understand
Freedom is not free you see
It didn’t work out how I planned

The freedom I was living
Turned out to make me a slave
Rather than bringing life to me
It buried me in my own grave

He led me down a dead end path
So He could show me His vision
It stopped way short of the water of life
And I had to make a decision

Would I turn around and walk away
Fleeing from the water’s edge
Or would I leave my road and run to Him
Embracing His freedom pledge

I stepped off that dead end road
And simply trusted He would save
With each step I took, I felt His hand
Lifting me out of my grave

Amazing Grace how sweet the sound
That saved a wretch like me
I once was lost but now I’m found
Was blind but now I see

Oh, Your grace, how sweet the sound
It called me when I was bound
Your mercy reached into my night
And led me home into Your light
[Chorus]
Your amazing grace has set me free
It took away the chains on me
You called my name, I heard Your voice
Now I’m Yours, my heart rejoice

And gave me life, a hope within
Your love has claimed me as Your own
I stand redeemed before Your throne

You called my name, I heard Your voice
Now I’m Yours, my heart rejoice

BOOM WHACK…On and on and on…BOOM WHACK (Devotional and Song)

Song: Boom Whack – Duet

Scripture:

“Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past. See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland.”
— Isaiah 43:18–19

Devotional:

The rising sun paints the morning sky with hope, inviting us into the beauty of a new day. It whispers of fresh starts and the promise of renewal. Yet, for many of us, the wounds of yesterday refuse to let go. The shadows of failure, shame, and trauma cling tightly, replaying scenes of despair in the theater of our minds. It’s as if we’re trapped in a never-ending game of “Whack-a-Mole,” fighting one emotion or thought only to have another rise up in its place.

This is the reality of being stuck. It’s not just about our circumstances; it’s about the battle within—those moments when a song, a picture, or a memory catapults us back into the heart of our pain. It feels like an endless loop, and we wonder, Will I ever be free?

The answer lies not in fighting harder, but in surrendering deeper. God’s invitation to us isn’t to conquer the game but to unplug it. Psalm 46:10 says, “Be still, and know that I am God.” These words remind us that freedom doesn’t come from our striving, but from resting in the One who holds the power to heal, restore, and renew.

When we unplug the game, we stop trying to manage our emotions or control our past. Instead, we place them in God’s hands, trusting His perfect timing—kairos, the appointed moment of grace and breakthrough. In His presence, the relentless ticking of chronos time fades, and we find the peace that surpasses all understanding.

Today, let the Spirit of God meet you in your stuckness. Release the battle to Him, and allow Him to write a new story over your life—one of hope, courage, and renewal. Remember, you are not defined by your failures or bound by your trauma. You are held by a loving God who declares, “See, I am making all things new” (Revelation 21:5).

Prayer:

Thank You for being the God who makes all things new. Today, I surrender the weight of my past to You. Help me to let go of the things that keep me stuck and to trust in Your power to heal my brokenness. When reminders of pain arise, let me rest in Your peace and listen for Your voice. Lead me into the newness You have prepared for me.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Writing:

The dawning sun throws brilliant colors across the canvas of the sky
It’s a new day, a new beginning, a new chance to experience life
Let me forget the failures of the past and engulf myself in the fullness of the NOW
Inhaling the goodness and fullness of His Spirit, taking in the beauty of His creation
With anticipation of all today brings, I will lean into the possibilities that await me
I will open every door and every window of opportunity and grab them with gusto

And then it happens…like it has dozens of times before…
I hear a song
I see a picture
Words are spoken
Thoughts intrude
Emotions unwind

I’m a failure
I’m unworthy
I’m hopeless
I can’t
I won’t
I give up
It’s not worth it
I’m not enough
It’s time to quit
I can’t go on

Chronos – time marches on

I find myself in the bizarre Whack-a-Mole fight for my life
I whack the mole of failure, but unworthiness pops up its ugly head
I whack the mole of unworthiness, but hopelessness pops up its ugly head
With every tick of the clock, it’s another mole
Boom Whack…On and on and on…Boom Whack…
Beating down addictions, defeating thoughts, destructive emotions and isolating behaviors
When will this end, this endless game of self-defeat?

Kairos – His time is now…the right time is now

And His Spirit speaks to my soul…
…and whispers…
…unplug the game…

And the clock stops…
…everything goes dark…
…silence surrounds me…
…the game is over…
…and in that moment I know…
…I’m going to be ok…

The dawning sun throws brilliant colors across the canvas of the sky
It’s a new day, a new beginning, a new chance to experience life
Let me forget the failures of the past and engulf myself in the fullness of the NOW
Inhaling the goodness and fullness of His Spirit, taking in the beauty of His creation
With anticipation of all today brings, I will lean into the possibilities that await me
I will open every door and every window of opportunity and grab them with gusto

And the sun sets
And the moon and stars shine bright
And my head rests on my pillow
And His Spirit comforts me
It’s been a good day
Let me do THAT again tomorrow

Song: Unplug the Game

[Verse 1]
The morning breaks, the sky glows bright,
Your mercy wakes me with the light.
But echoes whisper in my ear,
Reminding me of doubt and fear.

[Pre-Chorus]
Every fault I try to hide,
Still keeps pulling me inside.
But You are calling, strong and true,
Breaking through with something new…

[Chorus]
Be still, my soul, let go, let go,
He is making all things grow, don’t you know?
No more striving, no more shame,
He’s the healer, He’s the same.
So I’ll unplug the game, lay it at Your feet,
And find my peace complete.

[Verse 2]
The clock keeps ticking in my mind,
I chase the past but fall behind.
I fight the thoughts, but they won’t leave,
A lie I always seem to believe.

[Pre-Chorus]
Then You whisper, soft and strong,
“Child, you’ve fought for far too long.”
“Keep on striving, for I am near,”
And suddenly, it all is clear…

[Boom Whack Bridge]
But the past shouts back…
Boom whack—down it goes!
Another fear, another foe!
Boom whack—I swing again,
But still, the fight won’t end!
Tick-tock, another round,
Trying hard, but still I drown.
Boom whack—I hear You say…
“Child, unplug, and walk away…”
(Bridge fades into silence—building anticipation for the final chorus!)

[Final Chorus – Soft to Powerful]
Be still, my soul, let go, let go,
He is making all things grow, don’t you know?
No more striving, no more shame,
He’s the healer, He’s the same.
So I’ll unplug the game, lay it at Your feet,
And find my peace complete.

[Outro]
And the sun sets, the stars shine bright,
Your Spirit holds me through the night.
It’s been a good day, I let go,
Tomorrow, Lord, let’s do it again.

But then I prayed (Devotional and Song)

Female Vocal

Scripture:
“The righteous cry out, and the Lord hears them; he delivers them from all their troubles. The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.”
— Psalm 34:17-18 (NIV)

Devotional: “But Then I Prayed”

When life presses in, and our hearts feel heavy, it can be hard to believe that God is near. The weight of struggles and the darkness of despair can make us feel isolated, as though no one, not even God, understands or cares. Yet, Psalm 34 reminds us of a profound truth: God hears. He is close. He saves.

The words “The righteous cry out” don’t paint a picture of someone who has it all together. Instead, they describe someone who is desperate, someone who acknowledges their need for God. This is where breakthrough begins—not in perfection, but in surrender. When we pray, we aren’t informing God of our troubles; we’re inviting Him into them. He’s always near, especially to the brokenhearted, ready to comfort and deliver.

In the song But Then I Prayed, the turning point isn’t when the storms disappear but when the author chooses to pray. That moment of prayer shifts the focus from the overwhelming problem to the overwhelming presence of God. Prayer is where despair meets hope, and faith is renewed.

No matter what you’re facing today—whether it’s grief, uncertainty, or fear—cry out to God. He hears you. He draws near to the crushed in spirit. And while the circumstances may not change immediately, you will begin to feel His nearness, His strength, and His peace.

Prayer:
Loving Father,
Thank You for the promise that You hear us when we cry out. Thank You for being close to the brokenhearted and saving those who feel crushed under life’s weight. Today, we bring our burdens to You, knowing that You are strong enough to carry them and loving enough to walk with us through every trial.

Lord, help us to trust You even when the answers don’t come quickly. Let Your presence be our refuge and Your peace our comfort. Draw near to us, remind us that we are never alone, and teach us to find strength in surrendering to You in prayer.

In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.I wrestle through the night,

Writing
Rest evades my grasp,
The burdens seem to multiply,
Mountains rising fast.
Before my weary eyes,
The avalanche descends,
I find myself ensnared,
With nowhere to transcend.
In stasis I remain,
Frozen in my plight,
Caught within the shadows,
Of an endless, silent night.
I can’t move another inch,
Resignation takes its toll,
Oh, I surrender now,
I yield, my weary soul.

But then… I prayed.

Oh Lord, don’t let the darkness take my life today.
You promised, “Trust in Me.”
You said, “Lay your burdens down.”
Yet it seems the weight I bear
Is the cage that holds me bound.
Wherever I may wander,
There, I find my woe.
Unlock the door before me,
Release the chains I know.
Please, oh please, move that mountain,
With just a swipe of Your hand.

Today, I seek a fresh start,
You’ve freed me from my bonds,
Yet as I gaze around me,
I see a world of pain.
Hope seems so elusive;
My heart sinks in despair.
What kind of God are You,
When suffering reigns everywhere?
Countless cry out in anguish,
Many will perish today.
If You don’t care for their plight,
Why should I hope in Your way?
I wring my hands in grief,
For those I hold so dear,
Doubts creep in my spirit,
And linger ever near.

But then… I prayed.

Place Your healing hand, Lord,
Upon my loved ones’ souls,
Let their pain be lifted,
Restore them, make them whole.
If it is Your will,
Give new life a chance,
Spare them from the grave,
Allow them one more dance.

I falter time and again,
No other way to say.
I can’t evade the truth;
This mess I’ve made today.
I’ll fix it, take control,
With my own two hands I’ll strive,
To navigate the chaos,
To keep this hope alive.

But then… I prayed.

Oh God, let not my will,
But Yours alone be done.
I’ll step aside in reverence,
And humbly seek Your sun.
I’ll ask, and seek, and knock,
Trusting You with all my strife,
Regardless of the outcome,
I’ll remain within Your life.

We’re built for community,
Not meant to walk alone.
The prayer of the righteous
Has power, great and known.
Elijah, a man like us,
Prayed fervently for rain,
For three long years and more,
The skies withheld their grain.
Then he prayed once more,
And the heavens opened wide,
With faith like his, may we
Receive the blessings You provide.
May our prayers be faithful,
Diligent and true,
That in the long, hard journey,
We shine brightly in You.

Song

[Verse 1]
The night was long, the weight was strong,
The shadows whispered, “You don’t belong.”
I felt the fear, the dark surround,
No light, no hope, no solid ground.

[Pre-Chorus]
And in my sorrow, in my despair,
I found Your presence waiting there.

[Chorus]
But then I prayed, and You were near,
Your voice of love cast out my fear.
Your mercy came, Your grace remained,
The chains were gone—You healed my pain.
But then I prayed, but then I prayed.

[Verse 2]
The storms rolled in, the waves were high,
The questions burned, “Lord, why, oh why?”
My strength was gone, my faith ran dry,
Yet still I lifted up my cry.

[Pre-Chorus]
And in the chaos, I heard You say,
“My child, I’m here, don’t turn away.”

[Chorus]
But then I prayed, and You were near,
Your voice of love cast out my fear.
Your mercy came, Your grace remained,
The chains were gone—You healed my pain.
But then I prayed, but then I prayed.

[Bridge]
Mountains move, and waters part,
Your power reaches every heart.
When all seems lost, when hope is faint,
Your name alone sustains the saints.
I called to You, and You replied,
Your love restored my life inside.

[Chorus]
But then I prayed, and You were near,
Your voice of love cast out my fear.
Your mercy came, Your grace remained,
The chains were gone—You healed my pain.
But then I prayed, but then I prayed.

[Outro]
So I will pray through every fight,
I’ll lift my song in darkest night.
Your love will hold, Your peace will stay,
Forevermore, I’ll sing and say:
But then I prayed, and You were near,
Your light of hope erased my fear.
