Scripture
“What time I am afraid, I will trust in thee.”
— Psalm 56:3 (KJV)
Devotional Thought
What does it mean to trust God?
Is it trusting Him as long as there is money in the bank?
As long as the doctor says everything is going to be okay?
As long as I know how the story ends?
Or perhaps, even better, as long as I can still control the outcome?
That isn’t really trust.
Trust begins where control ends.
David knew something about that. He spent years running from Saul, hiding in caves, surrounded by enemies, and wondering when God would fulfill His promise. David didn’t always know what God was going to do. But he kept coming back to the same place:
“I will trust You.”
Job had even less explanation. He lost almost everything, and God didn’t give him the answer he wanted. Job couldn’t see what was happening behind the scenes. Yet he could say:
“Though he slay me, yet will I trust in him.”
— Job 13:15 (KJV)
And then there is Jonah.
Jonah didn’t begin with trust. He ran. He resisted. He tried to control where his life was going. But eventually, sitting in the darkness of that great fish, Jonah came to understand something:
“Salvation is of the LORD.”
— Jonah 2:9 (KJV)
Jonah couldn’t control the storm.
He couldn’t control the fish.
He couldn’t control Nineveh.
And he certainly couldn’t control God.
Neither can I.
Maybe that’s part of what God is teaching me when He asks me to trust Him.
Trust doesn’t mean I know what God will do.
Trust doesn’t mean I like what is happening.
Trust doesn’t mean I understand His timing.
Trust means I believe that God is God—and I am not.
I can make plans.
I can work hard.
I can save money.
I can seek wise counsel.
I can do everything I know to do.
But eventually, I have to release the outcome.
And that is where faith begins.
So how will I trust?
Perhaps not by trying harder to feel confident.
Perhaps by simply choosing, again and again:
I will trust You.
When I am afraid—
I will trust You.
When I cannot see—
I will trust You.
When I don’t understand—
I will trust You.
When I cannot control the outcome—
I will trust You.
When the answer is not what I hoped for—
I will trust You.
Because my trust isn’t ultimately in the outcome.
My trust is in the One who holds the outcome.
Prayer
Father,
Teach me what it really means to trust You.
I confess that I often call it trust when what I really have is control. I trust You when I have enough money, when I understand the plan, when I can see the road ahead, and when the outcome looks favorable.
But You are asking me for something deeper.
Teach me to trust You when I cannot see.
Teach me to trust You when I am afraid.
Teach me to trust You when I don’t understand.
Teach me to trust You when I cannot change the circumstances.
Like David, help me trust You while I wait.
Like Job, help me trust You when I have no answers.
Like Jonah, bring me back when I try to run from Your will.
And when I don’t know what tomorrow holds, remind me that You hold tomorrow.
I don’t need to know the outcome to trust You.
I don’t need to control the outcome to trust You.
I only need to know You.
So today, whatever comes, whatever changes, whatever I cannot understand—
I will trust You.
Amen.
